This 25-minute film explores the unintended consequences of innovation through the story phosphate mining in rural Florida.
Phosphate is the key ingredient in fertilizer which is necessary to feed the world, but strip-mining for phosphate causes massive environmental damage, and some believe that phosphate waste is causing cancer in rural communities. As the mining industry works to expand operations throughout the state, conservationists fight to prevent further mining permits. Both sides square off at a county commissioners meeting, where the fate of phosphate mining is decided by a few public servants.
